Families from big cities such as Cincinnati and St. Louis have been summering at Biddeford Pool, on the southern coast of Maine, since the mid-1800s. In the early days, most visitors stayed in hotels or boarding houses, but around the turn of the century, some summer visitors decided to build cottages there. Over the years, these people played, sailed, laughed, ate and drank together. Today the descendants of many of these families are still summering at the Pool and enjoying the ocean breezes that attracted their great-grandparents, and some people who first discovered it on vacation ended up living there year-round.

In this collection of short articles written by Pool residents themselves, we explore the histories of some of the old houses, such as iconic Eagle’s Nest, and recount memories of swimming, sailing races and golf. We also write about some of our favorite spots, including the big beach and the Store, and describe some long-lost traditions, such as cooking lobster in beds of seaweed over hot rocks. This isn’t just a book about summer, it is also about history, family and community.

She has written a family history blog, Writing Up the Ancestors, since 2013, and she contributes to the collaborative blog Genealogy Ensemble. Janice and her husband, photographer Harold Rosenberg, have two sons and two grandsons. Her family has been summering at Biddeford Pool since about 1925.

With her roots going back to 1907, Christy Bergland is a lifelong summer resident of Biddeford Pool. An artist with an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and a summer residency at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, Christy has drawn and painted the land and sea of the Pool for years with an implicit quest to understand her relationship to this unique and beautiful place. This curiosity about connection has led her to ask other summer folk, “How did you happen to find Biddeford Pool?” and this has inspired many humorous and heartfelt stories of experiences here.
